720-722 Commerce Street

History

“An important row of four three-story, brick commercial buildings comprising most of the 700 block of Commerce Street was built in the early 1890s along what was then a major commercial street in Lynchburg. The district’s most intact row of buildings dates from the 1890s. The individual buildings have similar characteristics - decorative brick work, arched fenestration, and paneled and arcaded brick parapets, but each is distinctly different in facade design, creating a streetscape of varied textures and patterns.” - from the National Register of Historic Places.

720 Commerce Street was built in 1892 as a three-story brick warehouse. The building’s architectural feature include: three front asymmetrical bays, a flat parapet roof, paneled brick parapet, corbelled brick cornice and pilasters, round-arched 3rd story windows, and a 1970’s modernized storefront which displays the address “720” in massive mirrors and smoked glass.

722 Commerce Street was built in 1894 as a three-story brick warehouse. The building’s architectural features similarly include: three front symmetrical bays, a flat parapet roof, paneled brick parapet, paired pilasters, classical cornice with swags & pilasters, round-arched 3rd story windows, and a modernized storefront with awnings.
