Jacob Lawrence earned the distinction as one of the great artists of the 20th century early in his career with the widely recognized narrative series, The Migration of the Negro, based on the experiences of his family, recollections of people in his community and research he conducted in the Schaumburg Collection. This powerful portrayal of African American migration from the agricultural communities of the South to the industrial cities of the North catapulted Lawrence to overnight fame. For more than 65 years Jacob Lawrence was an astute observer and storyteller who focused on the struggle for freedom and justice in America from the Civil War period of the 1860s through the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s to the end of the twentieth century.
The evening length program, COLÔR-ÓGRAPHY: The Dances of Jacob Lawrence, performed by the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company is organized into four sections created by choreographers, Donald Byrd, Rennie Harris, Reggie Wilson and Kevin Ward. Audiences will be treated to a visual feast of movement that will illuminate and comment on some of Lawrence's most famous paintings.
