Storm Warning: Dance Theatre of Lynchburg performs A WINTRY MIXDecember 3 & 4, 2004, 8pm
Dance Theatre of Lynchburg is proud to bring you A WINTRY MIX: an atypical blend of dances inspired by the bleak and the balmy. Featured on the program are new and reconstructed works by Artistic Director, Keith Lee as well as new works commissioned for the Company and choreographed by guest artists. Keith Lees Rococo, which was originally choreographed for the Ballet of Contemporary Arts, is being revived for this season. The witty contemporary selection reveals the gaud and extravagance of the baroque era. Also choreographed by Keith Lee for the Ballet of Contemporary Arts, Vestiges of Worship, will appear on the program. Danced by guest artists, Karen Niceley and Delano Jean-Pierre, this intimate and solemn duet is set to Mozarts Vespers. Newly commissioned works include those of Adrienne Armstrong, former principal with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. Ms. Armstrong created a romantic work for the Repertory Ensemble entitled A Love Before Time. And Demarcus Williams, formerly of the Dallas Black Dance Theatre, breathes life into our City with a colorful and pulsing festival dance set to the rhythms of Nuyorican Soul. This work, premiering in A Wintry Mix is entitled, Lynchburg Carnivale. Another new work, Pokino•, created by emerging choreographer, Karen Niceley, assembles upon a rhythmic, almost hypnotic, musical score. Ms. Niceley is the co-founder of New York based dance group, The Gritty Cherries, and instructor for Dance Theatre of Harlems Dancing Through Barriers program. To round out the program The Repertory Ensemble performs an excerpt from Petrushka, a sampling of the ballet burlesque in four acts set to the music of Stravinsky, which will be performed in its entirety in the Spring. Staged by Keith Lee after Michael Fokine, The Doll Dance excerpt is a playful and sprightly introduction into the classic story ballet. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $7.50 in advance and $10.00 at the door. For more information please contact Dance Theatre of Lynchburg at (434) 846-6272. |
